Light & Vaastu Shastra

In Vaastu Shastra Sun is very important because Sun is the basis of life force energy from where the Universe gets its rythem. And Sun is the centre point of this universal rhythm. The Sun arises in the East and sets in the West,no matter where you are in the world.

Four particular days of the year are important for understanding the Sun's annual path.
  • 21st March and 23rd September when the day and night are of equal length.
  • 21st June, the shortest day of the year in the Southern Hemisphere.
  • 22nd December the longest day of the year in the Suthern Hemisphere and vice versa.
Every year, the same rhythm continues so,it is better to make our home according to this universal flow of energy. Here our "rishis" and saints help us with the ancient wisdom of Vaastu Shastra.

SOLAR ORIENTATION:
Usually when a vaastu consultant plans a home,he takes care of the magnetic orientation i.e. Home should be made according to the magnetic flow.Wall should be constructed parallel to magnetic north. There is the solar orientation too i.e. plan your home with respect to the Sun.

Apparent magnetic north can be very different to where solar north is (upto 20 degrees),this can make all the difference between a passive solar design being viable or not.

Our local council should be able to give us details of what the offset should be,as this varies from place to place. For the ideal house orientation, the main long axis of the building runs East,West i.e. the ridge line.We can move this to about 20 degrees without ill effect, but most of the glass in the building must face the Sun.when planning the building orientation consultant also takes into account the location of landscape features on your plot i.e. trees and walls etc.which will impact on how we harness the Sun.Ideally sunlight should not be blocked out as the Sun tracks across the sky.

For using the sun to our advantage, first of all we should have an idea of the path of the sun. The fact that the sun is lower in the sky in winter than in summer allows us to plan and construct buildings that capture the heat in winter and reject heat in summer.

In India four seasons come and rotate according to the movement of the sun. Because of the distance between the sun and earth , climatic changes happen from time to time. Since we live in our home through the summer and winter we should design for the entire year.

THE COMPOSITION OF SUNLIGHT

Sun light consists of 2 spectra of raise; visible spectrum and invisible spectrum.
The visible spectrum consists of seven colours; i.e; violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red these colours, and their intensity, have deep impact on the psychological mood and thought processess of a human. While creating a living space, the exposure to the sun's raise should be in balance.
Different colours come because of difference in wave length of colours. The ultra violet(UV) raise have a shorter wave length than the visible light and cancle bacteria as well as aid in the synthesis of vitamin D in living beings. The infrared raise have a longer wave length than the visible light raise and they are the cause for the heat in the sun light. This fact is also prone to difference in heat distribution. North East is dominant being the coolest. The other extreme end that is on the south east is dominated by the infrared raise. So it will be the hottest region it is called "Agnaya" in Vaastu Shastra which is the cause of fire in the South East.

HOW VAASTU USES THE BENEFITS OF THE SUN
The intensity of the sunlight changes with changes and location on the earth. Vaastu Shastra takes these changes into account for designing the house. Vaastu, considers the sun as the life giving or supporting the element. Hence, the principle that the West and the South walls should be thicker and heavier that the East and North respectively.
